One of life’s most precious gifts is insight. For a while now, I sought to understand the nature of unconditional love. I often hear people speak of it nonchalantly, and I would soon witness they walk not what they talk. Many ideas have been written about it with examples from notable people in history. Classic stories on unconditional love have often been the subject of leadership and spirituality books. Yet, do we truly understand how to love unconditionally?
I marvel at another gift we gain from life. When we ask thoughtful questions, even if murmured quietly to ourselves, we get answers. At times these answers come to us in unexpected ways, perhaps through newly formed relationships. It is with insight through our life lessons that we gain the answers. While we live through their meaning, we swim in the stormy sea of uncertainty and delight in the calmness of blue skies afterward. Relationships serve to define us and teach us about ourselves. We take on roles to live through dramatic scenarios that fully engage us body-heart-mind-spirit. It is through these roles we learn the answers to our question. How we feel and what we think give us clues to the answers we seek. I often wonder why it is necessary to act our part in this stage of understanding. Could it be that if we are living through the nature of our question, that we would remember our answers more deeply?
So, I asked what is unconditional love? I soon found myself engaged in relationships that brought forth the heart of my question, and with each act of love I learned my answers. Unconditional love truly means loving without conditions, evaluations, judgment, expectations, criticisms, controls or manipulations. It is loving without fear. It is loving with an open heart, open mind and open hands to reach out at a soul level even when the terrain to connectedness is so unkind and unforgiving. It is loving with compassion and serenity, allowing others to be on their life’s journeys unimpeded. It is believing that all is in Divine Order and everything is as it should be at this point in time and place. We are all co-creators of our own stories. Perhaps we learn as well that we have the power to change our stories as we have created them in the first place. So, unconditional love continues the flow of loving energy. It comes from the heart, from the seat of our soul.
There are times when I find myself drawn to dramatic sequences. As I reflect upon the dramatic story unfolding and my contribution to it, I would then realize where my lessons still needed to be played out once more. Anytime I feel something tugs at my heartstrings or causes me to react, I know therein lies the crux to the answer to my question. So, I play the part until I learn my life’s lesson, the answer to my question, ‘what is unconditional love?’
